What's happened to our buried rubbish?

This week we dug up the rubbish that we buried some weeks ago to see what had happened to each type. We found that the apple and banana had changed; they had shrivelled up and become smaller, we think given more time the would decompose all together and mix in with the soil.

The plastic, foil and chippy packets were no different apart from a little bit of soil stuck to them. We don't think that these materials will decompose for 'heaps of time'.

The paper had begun to get holes in it. We think it would take longer for the paper to decompose.

So the lesson learned from all this: Try to reduce the amount of foil, plastic bags and wrap that you use. Plastic containers are cheaper in the long run, re-useable and keep products from getting squashed; why not save some money and the environment at the same time - go on I dare you!
