We have had a great time and I look forward to watching all these guys continue to learn in 2012 with Nerina in Room 7.

8 more days in Room 8 2011. It is a busy time of year and we will continue to work hard to ensure we are continuing to show PRIDE in Room 8. Please help at home by keeping the routines consistent.
Please send back your raffle ticket money and card. We will draw the raffle this week.
The final celebration time is on Wednesday December 14th at 10.00a.m. It would be great to see lots of you there to celebrate another great year in the life of DPS.

How quickly the time is going by.
We will continue to work hard in the next 2 weeks. Keep up the reading and basic facts at home...this practice is really important. We are also working extra hard on children taking responsibility for themselves especially around making good behaviour choices.It can be easy to say ...but they were doing it....students need to keep asking themselves those 2 key questions....
Am I in the right place? Am I doing the right thing?
In week 7 the students will bring home a note with their class and teacher for next year. Look out for this note.
Have you sold your raffle tickets yet? Please bring them back with the money to the office.

FOOD FAIR.... Friday November 11th. Each class have a stall. Our class will be doing a sausage sizzle.....so please let me know if you can help in any way...donating some sausages,onions, bread or sauce... cooking the sausages on the night. More info in the newsletter.

Into the last 2 weeks of term and they are busy ones.
This week on Wednesday and Thursday, there will be learning conferences. Learning conferences are an opportunity for your child to share their learning with you. In Room 8, children have their first learning meeting after approx 6 weeks at school so some students will be having those meetings this week and some of the children who have been here for 2 terms will have a learning conference. There will be more learning conferences in Week 5 of next term.
On Friday our class will host celebration time in the hall. Celebration time is 9.15a.m and parents are welcome to come along if they have time.

What's been happening in Room8....

Wow!!! How fast is this term going....This week we have had our class and individual photos taken. We have been working hard with all our learning. At maths time we have been learning about fractions... Ask your children ..What is half of 6 ? 8? or get them to share 12 things between two people.
On Friday this week we did list writing for the first time. We write as many words as we can in 10 minutes. Some of us wrote 18 today. Next week when we do it again, we want to beat our old score. I wonder how many we will be able to write by the end of the term... and the end of the year.
PRIDE is important to us at Douglas Park. This week we have been learning to be peaceful while we work on Independent activities. This coming week we will be working on using respectful language both at school and at home.
Please order your calendar...there will be no late orders taken so don't miss out!!! They make great presents for Grandmas at Christmas time.

At Douglas Park School we are going to be using the excitement and interest about the Rugby world cup in our next Inquiry topic. The Big Question is: How can New Zealand show respect as the host nation of the Rugby World Cup?
Each class has been allocated a country to find out about. We are Namibia.So we will be finding out about this country and this team!!!

We have had a busy first week back at school.We have been learning about swinging at PE time...check out our slideshow. We have done some more learning to use the pencil tool on kidpix and drew some houses. See our work in the photos.

We also practiced our cutting and pasting skills. Come in and see our finished work up in Rm 8 and in the hall. We have a slideshow of us working on these.

Next week we will have 2 more new students and that will be 19 kids and Jane in Rm 8.

We will start Term 3 with 17 students. Welcome to Harlym who starts with us on the first day of term 3. We will also have some other new students coming. We look forward to showing them how to be great school learners. This term we will continue with all our reading,writing and numeracy reading. We will be doing lots of interesting ways to move in PE and of course we will be showing PRIDE all the time.

Congratulations to Sam. he is going to PRIDE day out with Mr Brown on Tuesday. Our class voted him as the student who has consistently shown PRIDE this term. That's great Sam. You can only be voted for if you have never lost any golden time...so there is a goal for you to strive for next term.

We had dress ups for Golden time on Friday. It was great fun to try all the different dress ups that children brought along from home.

Max was the PRIDE winner for Week 7. He is working hard on showing PRIDE and making good learning choices. On the wall behind Max you can see our snakes that we made. Murphy, from our class, knows lots about snakes and we used our white thinking hat to brainstorm some facts about snakes to go with our pictures.

There are 16 students in Room 8 now. Ashar and Ryan started in Week 7. We continue to work hard on our reading,writing and maths. At PE, now that we have finished the cross country, we are learning to throw and catch.

On Friday 17th June, we had a treasure hunt for Golden time. We had to read and follow the clues. We looked all round the school and in the end, we found the treasure in Room 8!

In Room 8, we now have 14 students. It has been a busy week. On Thursday, we had cross country. We have all been training hard. Sam finished 4th in the Yr 1 race. That was good stuff!! He was racing against kids who started school from April last year. We know he has been doing lots of training with his big brother Jake, who cleaned up the Yr 3 race and then ran again and finished 4th in the Yr 4 race. These boys Dare to Dream!!!!

On Wednesday we held a belated Halloween Disco. Room 8 were out in force, strutting their stuff on the dance floor but can you recognise this disco devil?

We've really enjoyed creating our boat on the sea pictures. We used coloured paper and looked at the different effects when we ripped and cut it. We decided to rip the paper to create the sea and cut out shapes to make our boats. Have a look through our window to see everyone's work.

Lots of our class have been showing PRIDE and we have plenty of certificates to prove it! Besides the weekly PRIDE certificate room 8 have been collecting 50 PRIDE ticket certificates too. I wonder how long it will be before someone gets 100?

Where has the year gone?? That is the question we're all asking ourselves, but when I look back I can see that everyone in Room 8 has made a huge amount of progress from when they first started. We're going to keep up the hard work this term and continue to become fantastic independent learners.

Please continue to support your kids at home with their reading and spelling homework, it makes a HUGE difference to their learning!

Are Room 8 going to be chosen as Kowhai class of the week? So far this term we've won the shield 4 times, I am biased of course but not at all surprised that 'the superstars' are getting noticed for their excellent behaviour in celebration time. The children of Room 8 are showing loads of PRIDE in the hall, sitting peacefully in the concentrating position and showing lots of respect to the hosts.

We have been working on becoming Peaceful thinkers over the last couple of weeks. We have learned a lot about what being a good peaceful thinker means, we have thought about how to be good listeners and how to show respect to the person who is speaking. We have tried to empathise with others and have come up with a class target for us to work towards.

Our target is to sit in the concentrating position when we are listening to others.

Glorious Golden Time on PhotoPeach

What's happened to our buried rubbish?

This week we dug up the rubbish that we buried some weeks ago to see what had happened to each type. We found that the apple and banana had changed; they had shrivelled up and become smaller, we think given more time the would decompose all together and mix in with the soil.

The plastic, foil and chippy packets were no different apart from a little bit of soil stuck to them. We don't think that these materials will decompose for 'heaps of time'.

The paper had begun to get holes in it. We think it would take longer for the paper to decompose.

So the lesson learned from all this: Try to reduce the amount of foil, plastic bags and wrap that you use. Plastic containers are cheaper in the long run, re-useable and keep products from getting squashed; why not save some money and the environment at the same time - go on I dare you!

Not only did Lennox receive the PRIDE certificate this week, but he was also very lucky to be able to choose a book from the book stand when Room 8's cube was chosen from the box. He chose a book about seeds and plants, happy reading Lennox!

Brain food

We've been thinking about the portion sizes of brain food that we all bring to school. Brain food is intended to be a quick bite of either fruit or vegetables to provide us with the energy and water we need to keep us going through a busy morning.

We looked at the children's brain food and decided that the brain food we bring to school needs to:
be ready to eat e.g. oranges cut into manageable pieces or feijoas cut in half and a spoon provided
fit in the palm of our hand
be packaged in an environmentally friendly way

The children may talk to you about the ideas we had for fruits that we could bring for brain food, they are all displayed on you window should you want to find out your child's ideas.
